Novelty or annoyance

As a recently arrived New Yorker, today’s events were a novelty.  I can only imagine that in a few months or weeks that things will change.

1) My subway stop was closed this morning, so I had to walk 16 blocks to a different station.  Note: If I had had coffee, I might have realized that I could have walked 10 blocks another direction and had a shorter trip.  Problem being the newbie.

2) It rained.  While rain in Los Angeles was a pain because it snarled up traffice and flooded streets, it was a relatively rare experience.  It rained today, all day, and I had to traverse part of the city amid the raindrops.

3) Music man on the subway.  Hopping on the subway to head to CUNY for a meeting, not only was the subway packed with people, but a guy with a harmonica stepped on and began a sort of medley of various old songs… Camptown Races might have been in there.

4) Museum Mile – which I am missing due to rain fatigue… would have been cool.

5) Discovered today that if I want to make a trip to Trader Joe’s it may be the equivalent of a trip to Mecca.  It’s a journey that involves serious commitment… and wine isn’t a guarantee.  What gives?  Ok, notice the novelty beginning to wane.

As is my spelling, so that’s a signal to me to hit spell check and sign off.

As ever,

Moonspinners morning

I don’t know how many of you ever saw the Haley Mills’ movie Moonspinners, but in the movie there is a scene where Haley and her potential love interest, whose name in the movie is Mark – don’t remember his real name, are hiding out in some ruins on the island of Crete.  The ruins are completely taken over by feral cats.

This morning, I went running in Morningside Park, and as I was running along the enormous stone wall that runs along the west side of the park I happened upon a huge feral cat population.  With the enormous stone structure and all the cats, I felt like I had been transplanted into Moonspinners…. with out the Greeks.

It is hot this morning, so I guess I will be baking by this afternoon.  This is the day when I have to traverse Manhattan from North to South, so I’m guessing I will look pretty deflated by the end of the day.  So unfair.

Unlike Haley Mills’ character I don’t have a nice Greek woman making me coffee and a boiled egg, so I must shake a leg.

Starting to feel normal

In that, I didn’t need to research my route to work before leaving my apartment.  I didn’t need to alertly watch each stop of the subway to determine if this was my stop.  And, I easily made it to a staff meeting that required subway and walking – and even enjoyed a farmers’ market on the way back home.

I was able to get a delicious salad for dinner… I am determined to start cooking for myself next week – although the college student’s kitchen has a little something to be desired.  I had to manically search for a bottle opener last night…. made a mental note to myself to buy screw top beers until further notice.

And this morning, I went running in Riverside Park which was just as beautiful, peaceful, and relaxing as yesterday’s run in Central Park.

And last night, I wasn’t exhausted by 8PM – I actually made it to 930.  I also made a list of personal goals for next week – and these would be small goals so don’t get two excited.  For example, I plan to go to two activities or events next week after work…. there is a French society that looks fun… and I need to check out the library and music scene – so that’s tonight’s research.  Otherwise I may become a YouTube junkie and never leave the apartment.

Living in New York and living with a roommate…

So I am sitting in my window – which has become a desk of sorts- and I am listening to someone’s phone alarm that has been going off for about 4 minutes.  They must have the same Blackberry because its my wake up call ring too.

Went running today in Central Park.  Just saying that sounds so novel to me, a true sign that I am completely a tourist in this city.  However, through this job, I get the feeling I will have a much more detailed interaction.  Yesterday, I started the morning with a meeting in Union Square.  It took me three trains to get there, but I made it on time and I actually found the spot.  By lunchtime I was in Harlem, and last night I walked all over to explore the upper west side… in fact so upper that I’m sure I was somewhere else.  I was so exhausted that by the time I returned home, I fell asleep by 830.

My roommate is a 2nd year law student at Columbia who is interning at the one of the courthouses.  I saw her Tuesday night when I arrived, but that’s been it so far.  It’s only Thursday morning.  She is very much the college student as reflected in her groceries… beer and cup of noodles and an alarmingly large bowl of potato salad, our furniture – the ubiquitous papadam chair – I haven’t seen one of those outside of Pier One in ages, and toiletries – Bonnie Bell (I didn’t know they were still in business) and the Garnier equivalent to Prell.  None of this is necessarily bad, it’s just interesting to see.

Work was great – there is so much to learn, but I don’t think I have worked with such an insanely dedicated staff in a while.  The burn center came close, but these people take it to a whole new level.  Their addiction to the mission and values of the organization is something to be admired and respected.  And, they are so enthusiastic and warm, it can be a bit overwhelming.  I think back to an interview I once had with a Disney person who talked about a pixie dust quota.  Pixie dust wouldn’t be far off, but it is hard to find fault with a group of individuals who are so determined to improve our communities.  I’m pretty thrilled to be a part of it.

Well, I am reaching the point when 1) that damn alarm has gone off again and it’s pretty annoying and 2) I really need to finish getting ready for work.

Seen this morning

A little yorkie pulling on his leash, desperate to catch up with a dog in front of him, and his deliverance looking owner, dressed in black t-shirt, jeans, and biker boots, who is walking him and in a raspy voice urging the yorkie, “Doooowwwnnn boy,  dooooowwwn boy!”

Awesome!

First day

and all is good, but I am dead tired.  So much so, that on the walk to the hotel, I stopped to read the sign about heart attacks in women because I was sure I couldn’t be this tired and full of post anxiety and not be having a heart attack.

I feel as if I have just completed a marathon and then opened the door to a whole new landscape that needs to be traversed.  But don’t worry, the landscape is beautiful and I want to head into it, but not metaphorically speaking, I need to get some sleep.

So sorry for the short post, but I swear to post more after Wednesday… tomorrow is day 2 of orientation in Boston and then the evening train to NY, and then my new home!

Looking forward to emptying my suitcase!

As ever,

K. Quinn
